PART 9
Five years later, I celebrated my seventy-eighth birthday.
Graham and his family came to the cottage.
This time, Paige carried the cake.
Not a store-bought cake.
She had made it herself.
The icing was slightly uneven.
The flowers were crooked.
And it was perfect.
She placed it on the table.
“Happy birthday, Evelyn.”
I smiled.
“Thank you.”
Graham handed me a small box.
I opened it.
Inside was a silver necklace.
The pendant was shaped like a tiny yellow house.
I looked at him.
He smiled.
“It’s for your cottage.”
I touched the pendant.
“I love it.”
Then he said:
“There is one more thing.”
He pulled out a framed photograph.
It was the old picture of Thomas, Graham, and me.
But someone had restored it.
Underneath it was a sentence.
She was never a burden. She was home.
My eyes filled with tears.
Graham hugged me.
“I wish I’d understood sooner.”
I whispered:
“You understand now.”
