PART 4

PART 4

My son,

If you are reading this, then I am no longer there to say what I should have said while I was alive.

I know you love your mother.

But love is not measured by how much money you give someone.

It is measured by whether you still see their humanity when they no longer have anything to offer you.

Graham’s hands began shaking.

Paige moved closer.

He continued.

Your mother spent her entire life putting everyone else first.

When you were young, she gave you everything she could.

When I became sick, she cared for me without complaint.

If I leave this world before her, I want you to remember one thing.

Your mother is not your responsibility.

She is your mother.

There is a difference.

Graham stopped reading.

His eyes filled with tears.

Then he continued.

Never make her feel like an obligation.

Never put her somewhere simply because it makes your life easier.

And if one day she has more money than you, don’t let that change how you treat her.

If you ever find yourself asking what she can give you, you have already forgotten what she gave you.

At the bottom of the letter was one final sentence.

Take care of her because she is Evelyn, not because she is your mother.

Graham dropped the letter onto the table.

Paige stared at him.

Neither spoke.

Then Graham whispered:

“She knew.”

“What?”

“Dad knew.”

Paige sat down.

“What did he know?”

“That someday I’d do exactly this.”
