PART 10
Alyssa snatched one of the papers from the table.
“What is this?”
“Put that down,” Vivian said.
Alyssa looked at her mother.
“Why?”
“Because you don’t understand.”
“Then explain it!”
Vivian stood abruptly.
Her chair scraped across the floor.
“You’re making a scene.”
Alyssa laughed.
A bitter, broken laugh.
“A scene?”
She looked around the room.
“Mom, you made me spend thirty years believing I was the only daughter in this family.”
Vivian’s face tightened.
“You are my daughter.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
Alyssa’s voice dropped.
“Am I Dad’s daughter?”
Vivian didn’t answer.
Alyssa’s lips trembled.
“Mom.”
Still nothing.
“AM I?”
Vivian closed her eyes.
And that silence was the answer.
Alyssa staggered backward.
I watched her sink into the chair.
For the first time in my life, she didn’t look powerful.
She looked like a little girl.
The same girl who used to stand in the doorway of our childhood bedroom while Vivian told me to sleep on the floor.
The same girl who once told me Dad loved her more because she was his “real” daughter.
Now she was staring at the woman who had taught her to say those things.
Mr. Bennett cleared his throat.
“There is another issue.”
Everyone looked at him.
“The will does not simply divide the estate between biological children.”
He opened the document.
“Mr. Harper anticipated that someone might attempt to challenge his paternity decisions or manipulate family members into taking DNA tests.”
Alyssa’s eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?”
“It means your father changed the distribution structure.”
He looked at me.
“His estate does not go automatically to whichever biological child remains.”
I felt my stomach drop.
Mr. Bennett continued.
“Mr. Harper established a trust for Candace Harper.”
Vivian stood completely still.
“A trust?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
Mr. Bennett didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he opened another folder.
“Before I disclose the amount, I need to explain something.”
He looked at me.
“Your father spent the last eleven years restructuring his assets.”
I frowned.
“Why?”
“Because he believed his wife and Alyssa were attempting to isolate you from him.”
Vivian’s face turned red.
“That is absurd.”
Mr. Bennett calmly replied, “I have correspondence documenting his concerns.”
“Letters can say anything.”
“I also have bank records.”
Vivian stopped.
The room became still again.
Mr. Bennett continued.
“Over eleven years, William Harper transferred ownership of several properties into a protected trust.”
Alyssa looked confused.
“How many properties?”
“Seven.”
“Seven?”
“Seven residential properties, two commercial buildings, his investment portfolio, and a significant portion of his liquid assets.”
Vivian’s eyes widened.
“That’s impossible.”
“It isn’t.”
“You’re saying my husband transferred everything?”
“No.”
Mr. Bennett shook his head.
“I’m saying he transferred almost everything.”
