PART 7
The meeting at 9:00 AM I barely slept that night.
At exactly 8:58 the next morning, I stepped into the executive floor wearing a navy suit instead of my old Horizon polo.
The receptionist smiled politely.
“Ms. Grant is expecting you.”
Richard was already inside.
So was Claire from HR.
Tyler sat at the far end of the conference table looking exhausted, his laptop closed in front of him.
Eleanor Grant entered carrying a thick black folder.
She sat down without greeting anyone.
Then she placed the folder in the center of the table.
“Before we discuss contracts,” she said calmly, “we’re going to discuss honesty.”
No one moved.
She opened the folder.
Inside were printed security logs, controller audit reports, badge access records, and surveillance photographs.
She slid the first page toward Tyler.
“Your badge entered Bay Three at 10:39.”
He nodded quietly.
The second page went toward Richard.
“Your executive badge entered at 10:37.”
Richard immediately spoke.
“I was inspecting production.”
Eleanor didn’t argue.
She simply slid another document across the table.
“The controller records show User 3 logged into administrative mode at 10:38.”
My eyes narrowed.
User 3.
Not User 14.
Richard’s account.
The room became painfully quiet.
Richard leaned forward.
“Administrative mode doesn’t mean parameters were changed.”
“You’re correct,” Eleanor replied.
“Forensic data shows User 3 unlocked protected editing. User 14 performed the modifications.”
Tyler’s face drained of color.
He looked toward Richard again.
The same reflex.
The same silent search for guidance.
Eleanor noticed it too.
The confession nobody expected Tyler suddenly pushed his chair back.
“I want legal representation.”
Richard snapped his head toward him.
“Don’t be ridiculous.”
Tyler stood.
“No.”
His voice cracked.
“I’m done.”
He looked directly at Eleanor.
“I changed the parameters.”
Nobody spoke.
Tyler’s eyes filled with tears.
“But Richard told me it wasn’t sabotage.”
Richard exploded.
“That’s a lie!”
Tyler slammed both hands onto the table.
“You said the machine would throw calibration alarms, Ethan would look incompetent during Meridian, and the board would approve replacing him with your consulting team!”
Claire covered her mouth.
Richard stood so fast his chair fell backward.
“You’re trying to save yourself!”
Tyler laughed bitterly.
“I already lost.”
He reached into his backpack and removed a small USB drive.
“I recorded the meeting.”
Richard stopped moving.
The silence that followed felt heavier than any shouting ever could.
