PART 7

PART 7

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“No.”

“Yes, Ms. Whitman.”

“That’s impossible. I never signed anything.”

“According to our records, there is a signature.”

I stood up.

My hands were shaking.

“Can you send me copies?”

“Yes, I’ll email them.”

After the call ended, I sat in silence.

My family hadn’t just expected me to pay.

They had involved me in something I knew nothing about.

Something much bigger.

And suddenly, the dinner incident wasn’t just about Mason.

It wasn’t just about disrespect.

It was the moment the truth finally cracked open.

My family didn’t invite me to dinner because they missed me.

They invited me because they needed something.

Again.

But this time…

I wasn’t the same Rachel who would quietly write a check.

This time, I was ready to find out exactly what they had done.

And the next morning, when I opened the documents Karen sent me…

I discovered the signature on the loan wasn’t the only thing that had been forged.

There was another name on the paperwork.

A name that made my entire family’s story fall apart.

The email arrived at 6:17 the next morning.

I remember the exact time because I was sitting at my kitchen table staring at my coffee, watching the steam disappear while my mind replayed the same sentence over and over.

There is a signature.

A signature I never made.

A loan I never approved.

A debt I never agreed to carry.

I opened the email.

The attachments loaded slowly.

Too slowly.

Almost like the universe was giving me one last chance to close the laptop and pretend everything was normal.

But normal was gone.

I downloaded the documents.

The first page was the property information.

My parents’ house.

The home I had spent years protecting.

The home I thought represented family.

Then I saw it.

My name.

Rachel Anne Whitman — Co-owner. For a moment, I felt confused instead of angry.

Because being added to the deed should have been a good thing.

It meant my father trusted me.

It meant maybe he had wanted to protect me.

Maybe he had planned to tell me.

But then I opened the next document.

The loan agreement.

My eyes moved down the page.

Loan amount:

$85,000.

Date:

Eighteen months earlier.

Borrower:

Thomas Whitman.

Co-borrower:

Rachel Anne Whitman.

I stared at the screen.

My father’s name.

My name.

But not my handwriting.

Not my signature.

I zoomed in.

The signature looked close.

Almost perfect.

Almost.

But I knew my own signature.

I had signed thousands of documents in my career.

That wasn’t mine.

My hands went cold.

Then I noticed something else.

The address listed on the loan documents.

It wasn’t my apartment.

It wasn’t even my parents’ house.

It was my old address.

The apartment I had lived in before buying my current place.

An address only my family knew.

I sat back.

Someone had used my personal information.

Someone had planned this.

This wasn’t a misunderstanding.

This wasn’t a mistake.

This was intentional.
